The Link Between Physical Exercise and Eye Health

One study conducted at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health found that people who engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity have a 73% lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 50.
Another study published in the journal Ophthalmology showed that regular exercise can help reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina. The researchers found that individuals who exercised at least three times a week had a 58% lower risk of developing diabetic retinopathy compared to those who did not exercise.
How exactly does exercise benefit our eyes? One theory is that physical activity improves blood circulation throughout the body, including the tiny blood vessels in the eyes. This increased blood flow delivers more oxygen and essential nutrients to the eyes, promoting their health and function.
Exercise also helps maintain a healthy weight and control conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which are risk factors for various eye diseases. By keeping these conditions in check, regular exercise can contribute to better eye health.
So, how much exercise is enough to reap these eye health benefits? The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking or cycling. Additionally, incorporating resistance training, flexibility exercises, and balance training can further enhance overall health and preserve vision.
As with any exercise routine, it's important to consult with your doctor before starting a new program, especially if you have any underlying health conditions. Your eye doctor can also provide specific recommendations based on your eye health and any pre-existing eye conditions.
