Konjunktivitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Have you ever experienced redness and irritation in your eyes? If so, you might have Konjunktivitis, commonly known as Pink Eye.
Konjunktivitis is a common eye condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, clear tissue covering the white part of the eye and lining the inner surface of the eyelid. It can affect one or both eyes and is highly contagious.
Causes of Konjunktivitis:
- Viral or bacterial infections
- Allergies
- Exposure to irritants
- Foreign objects in the eye
Symptoms of Konjunktivitis:
- Redness and swelling of the eyes
- Itchiness and irritation
- Watery or mucous discharge
- Crusty eyelids or lashes
- Blurry vision
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to consult an eye doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment Options:
The treatment for Konjunktivitis depends on the underlying cause:
- Viral Konjunktivitis: Usually resolves on its own within 1-2 weeks. You can use lubricating eye drops or cold compresses to alleviate symptoms.
- Bacterial Konjunktivitis: Antibiotic eye drops or ointments may be prescribed by a doctor.
- Allergic Konjunktivitis: Antihistamine eye drops or allergy medication can help relieve symptoms.
- Irritant-induced Konjunktivitis: Rinse your eyes with clean water and avoid the irritant.
During the treatment period, it is important to practice good hygiene, such as regularly washing your hands, not touching your eyes, and avoiding sharing personal items.
